Creating the Collaborative Classroom
Limited Capacity seats available

Think about the last good professional discussion you had. As educators, we crave opportunities to have professional conversations and work in small groups to increase our skills and, ultimately, the achievement and engagement of our students. So why are we hesitant to design spaces and learning opportunities that offer those same experiences to our students? Redefining and redesigning your classroom culture can be scary, but research shows learning environments structured as collaborative spaces where students can brainstorm, work in small groups, and receive direct facilitation from the teacher can do wonders. Ready for a new way of thinking about your classroom? START HERE!

Building relationships and connections with experts, teachers, administrators and others around the world is an effective way to discover new ideas, enhance student learning, & reflect on what we do in schools. Building a Personal and Professional Learning Network (PLN) on social media is a great way to overcome these barriers while still gaining inspiration from amazing experts and resources. Participants will explore opportunities and resources available for educators using a variety of social media platforms and create a plan for themselves and their staff to connect and grow professionally. We will share how we helped our teachers become more Connected Educators by hosting successful Twitter Parties across our district. In addition, we will share what we have learned while hosting #NoVAedChat (our weekly educational twitter chat), #TechCoachBC (monthly book club for Tech Coaches) and resources we love! Stop and Think: Digital Media Literacy for Secondary Students
Limited Capacity seats available

In today’s world, we are exposed to various forms of media and marketing from every direction, and nowhere is this bombardment more pronounced than on the internet. As our students begin to explore the vast digital landscape in front of them, they will inevitably encounter digital media that has been created with the direct purpose of influencing their attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, and knowledge base. In order to make effective decisions, our students must be able to stop and think and analyze and evaluate this media. One way for students to practice these skills is to create digital media themselves and to analyze these products in the context of marketing strategies and techniques, bias, and emotional appeal. This session will present the need for “digital media literacy” amongst our students and propose various lessons and units in which students develop digital media literacy awareness by creating their own media with distinct goals and purposes.

Student Engagement: What are we even talking about?
Limited Capacity seats available

Teachers are constantly told that the goal of quality instruction is high levels of student engagement. The question begs to be answered: what IS student engagement exactly? This session will provide several theoretical frameworks for understanding engagement, and will focus on classroom and building-level strategies that can use educational technology to leverage high student engaged learning based on current pedagogical knowledge. It aims to both answer the "why" and "how" in relation to this important construct.
